How Our Christmas Countdown Is Calculated
How our Christmas countdown is calculated
The countdown answer of record
The answer of record is currently 105 calendar days until Christmas 2026, calculated for the date in America/New_York. We calculate with civil calendar dates rather than dividing milliseconds by 86,400,000.
Calendar days versus exact time
Calendar days count date changes. Exact time counts complete seconds until midnight begins December 25. These values answer different questions, so an exact-time total can be less than the calendar-day number multiplied by 24 hours.
Timezones and the daily rollover
The crawlable answer changes at midnight in America/New_York. The exact timer also ends at midnight starting Christmas Day in America/New_York, so both measures use one clearly labelled reference. A visitor's own calendar date may differ near midnight because Sydney, London, Mumbai, and New York do not change date simultaneously.
Counting rules
Test cases and edge cases
- December 24 returns 1 calendar day until Christmas Day.
- December 25 returns 0 calendar days for the entire local date.
- December 26 begins the countdown to December 25 of the following year.
- Leap days are handled by the calendar library.
- Daylight-saving changes do not change the civil-date difference.
