Christmas Dates 2026: Advent, Christmas Eve and More

Seasonal date reference

Important Christmas-season dates in 2026

Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026, and Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24. The wider season contains religious, cultural, and public-calendar dates that do not all mean the same thing. This guide keeps their names, start times, and contexts separate instead of treating every event as another Christmas countdown.

Live calendar values use the current America/New_York date. The Christmas 2026 target stays fixed at December 25, 2026.

Dates, evenings, and substitute holidays are different

A Gregorian date begins at midnight, but not every observance is described that way. Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on December 4 and ends at nightfall on December 12. Writing only “December 5” would omit the first evening and could create a one-day disagreement between calendars.

Boxing Day remains December 26 even when a public-holiday system supplies a weekday substitute. In England and Wales, the published 2026 bank-holiday calendar lists Monday, December 28 as the Boxing Day substitute because December 26 is Saturday. That employment and banking rule does not rename the calendar observance.

Advent also needs a named tradition. The First Sunday of Advent is November 29 in the Roman Catholic 2026 calendar. Other churches and household Advent calendars can use different structures, so this page labels the source rather than presenting one practice as universal.

Use the dates without turning the season into deadlines

  • Mark fixed events first: services, school dates, work closures, travel, and gatherings controlled by another organisation.
  • Add preparation dates second: choose personal review points for cards, gifts, food, and travel rather than assuming an internet checklist is your deadline.
  • Label evening starts: include “at sundown” or the actual event time when a date-only entry could mislead.
  • Keep observances distinct: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany have different histories and meanings and should not be collapsed into interchangeable seasonal labels.

For a task sequence, use the Christmas planning guide. For local Christmas midnight in different places, use the worldwide countdown.

Sources and verification notes

The Advent date is checked against the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops 2026 liturgical calendar. The Hanukkah range is checked against Hebcal’s 2026 calendar. The Boxing Day substitute is checked against the UK government bank-holiday calendar. Kwanzaa’s December 26 to January 1 range is documented by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

These sources verify dates and calendar context; they do not define how every family observes an event. If an organisation controls your service, school, work, or travel time, confirm its current schedule directly.
