What Kwanzaa is
Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a celebration of African American culture, community and heritage. The name comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning first fruits, echoing harvest festivals celebrated across Africa. It is a cultural holiday rather than a religious one, so millions of families celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa back to back; the last gift of one season becomes the first night of the next.

Each evening a candle is lit on the kinara, a seven branched holder: three red, three green, one black. Every night carries one principle, the Nguzo Saba:
