Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, the fourth Thursday of November, and from mid-September that is a little over two months away. It is the anchor date of the entire American year-end: the last calm moment before the 29-day sprint to Christmas, the biggest travel week of the fall, and the unofficial green light for tree, lights and carols.

The 2026 Thanksgiving numbers
| Fact | 2026 answer |
|---|---|
| Thanksgiving date | Thursday, November 26 |
| Black Friday | November 27, exactly four weeks before Christmas |
| Advent Sunday | November 29, the same holiday weekend |
| Days from Thanksgiving to Christmas | 29 |
| Days from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day | 36 |
That 29-day gap matters more than it looks. Because the fourth Thursday can land anywhere from November 22 to 28, the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas window swings between 26 and 32 days from year to year. A November 26 Thanksgiving gives you a mid-length runway: not the luxurious month of an early Thanksgiving, not the brutal 26-day scramble of a late one. Our sprint plan maps those 29 days week by week.
Why the fourth Thursday, anyway
Lincoln fixed Thanksgiving as the last Thursday of November in 1863. In 1939 that meant a late November 30 date, and with the Depression still biting, retailers begged Franklin Roosevelt for a longer shopping season. He moved the holiday up a week, the country split between “Franksgiving” states and traditional states for two chaotic years, and Congress settled the matter in 1941: the fourth Thursday, by law. Every Thanksgiving date since, including 2026’s, comes from that compromise between tradition and shopping calendars. Some arguments never really end; they just get legislated.
What to do before the turkey
- Book travel by early October. Thanksgiving week is consistently the most crowded travel window of the fall, and the Sunday after is the single busiest day. Fares only climb.
- Claim your holiday hosting roles now. The Thanksgiving conversation is where Christmas hosting gets decided, usually by whoever speaks first.
- Finish gift shopping before the feast. Everything in the shopping timeline that lands in October exists so Black Friday is a victory lap, not a starting line.
- Decide the decoration question in advance. Tree up Thanksgiving weekend is the American default, and in 2026 it coincides with Advent Sunday, as the decoration guide explains.
One holiday, two countdowns
Thanksgiving is worth counting down to on its own, but it is also mile marker 29-to-go on the bigger road. The live Christmas countdown keeps both in view: when the days-remaining figure hits 29, the turkey is on the table and the sprint begins.
