Those two facts explain part of the American story. They do not prove that no earlier person ever used the words or held a midyear celebration. A careful history distinguishes the earliest documented example found from a claim about the first event anywhere.
July feels different below the equator
Christmas Day arrives during summer in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and much of South America. European winter imagery traveled with migration, religion and commerce, then met heat, long daylight and local food.
