What Advent actually is
The word comes from the Latin adventus, arrival. In the church calendar it’s the season of preparation before Christmas, and it’s genuinely old: a preparatory season appears in the West by the fifth and sixth centuries. For most of that history it was closer to Lent than to a party. A quiet, even fasting season. The candy-every-morning version is a much newer layer.
